Start the week on Friday

Friday, May 28, 2004

To you, from London, via Boston and Minneapolis, it's the news quiz!

Quiz me!

Bill got a 3 and the BBC told him, "You need to pay more attention. You'll never become an Afghan prince at this rate"
Scott got 5 and the same message. You'd think they'd have more than a couple of snotty remarks prepared. "Maybe China can lend you a brain." or "You should have been wearing a helmet, Mr. President."

It should also show if they are registered to vote.

Neighbor Search Ted sent this to me and I'll be damned if I can find anyone I know that does more than talk about their candiates. Get out your checkbooks, people.

Everything I know about saving a victim of dehydration and exposure I learned from this movie

Good, Bad, Ugly I think it may be time to watch this again. The full article this slideshow comes from says that they are releasing this with an additional 20 minutes restored from the original. They had to get Eli Wallach and Clint to come back to dub the extra stuff forty years later.
I recently had a converstaion with Bill and Jonathan about something I saw on IFC's Samurai Saturday feature. I have excerpted a couple of sections from it:
>Hey, I just saw Toshiro Mifune in Yojimbo on IFC's "Samurai Saturday" and
>recognized it right away as the frame for frame basis for the miserable
>"Last Man Standing" which largely explains why that movie seemed so
>idiotic. Yojimbo is great because everyone in it lives within about 75 feet
>of one another in houses that look like the joke wall from the end of
>Laugh-In but that doesn't translate well from medieval Japan to Gangsters
>in the 30's. It might have flown as a western.
>Or if they'd gotten Alan Sues instead of Bruce Willis.

Bill replies (correctly per another source)"
Yojimbo was the basis for "For a Few Dollars More", unless I'm confusing it
with Sanjuro. Whichever came first was the one used by Leone."

Penquin toss

YETI SPORTS As much as I like the albatross game I have preference for some of the other three.

Franken for Senate?

It's this or Rocket J. Squirrel I suppose? I think people will vote for me because I'm smart enough, I'm handsome enough, and doggone it, people like me.

A great step forward in paper folding

Origamibot I am pretty excited about this. First because it is always great when an milestone challenge of technology is met. Second because a lot of grad students can now take the time they were spending on fabricating little hats and get back to work on their theses. Next I am looking forward to the robot that can hang out at Dunn's for three or four hours at a stretch and play backgammon.

Conversation potatoes

Eat me. I have a hard time not reading anything that is put in front of me. Thanks to Chank! sending me this link I am now aware of, and dreading, food that bears slogans encouraging me to try other fabulous products, answer trivia questions of a dubious provenance, engage in knock-knock repartee, lower my mortgage payments or enlarge my member.

I got 3

Quiz Me.
I was impressed that I knew the three that I did, so I'm happy.
Bill says "5. I blew it on the Pope and the parliaments."

Friday is casual day. It doesn't mean no slack.

nasubi Hey, let's all not go to Japan for fear of ending up contestants in a year long reality game show which is based on living in a cell with nothing but contest entry forms and pens and nothing to eat, wear, or do except what you might win.

This weeks quiz

Bill says "5. I guessed on everything, except #6."

Scott says, "I got four, for exactly the same reason."
