That is what makes them so grotesque. When a first generation American named Henke Schmuel went to work in the new factory just outside of his depressed hometown back in the 30's he was as normal a man as you and I but years of exposure to plasticising agents and the bleaching effects of the curing process have taken his tragic form past the realm of human caricature and made him something closer to the novelty bowling pins he once thought would be his ticket out of Dogpatch. Is there a stronger word than irony? I can think of only one; Schmoo.

I think it would be hard to argue that Hello Kitty, Pikachu, Marvin the Martian, or the Shmoo are supposed to be human.
